ARISAN

Trying to explain “arisan” to a foreigner :

A social gathering with limited membership (relatives, classmates, neighborhood, ex-coworkers) Usually consists of 20 up to 30 people. They meet once a month and in every meeting member would put money of the same amount in a pot and then draw a lottery. The one who wins the draw will collect the money. The following month they will do the same except that the one who already wins will not participate in the draw. The meeting is either held at home, hosted by the winning member, or at a restaurant where the bill is shared by everybody. Originally the purpose of this gathering was to strengthen friendship or brotherhood among arisan members, so money was not the main objective. Money just served as a small incentive to encourage member to attend the meeting. Now arisan practice expands to businessmen where it serves as a means to raise capital.
